Alkalinity TEST FOR BOILER and COOLING WATER
In cooling water systems, alkalinity is of major importance since the total alkalinity of a water is one factor that must be considered when predicting the tendency for the water to precipitate calcium carbonate scale. Depending on the choice of chemical treatments to protect against corrosion and scale formation, the operating alkalinity and pH ranges are chosen to balance these two features.

Application
Procedure:
. 20 drops of sample water was taken in a dry test tube with a calibrated pipette.
. Adding 1 drop of Phenolphthalein indictor.
. Adding HCl with a calibrated pipette till the colour of the solution changes from pink to colourless.
Dosage
Count the number of drops of HCl. Calculation:
Volume of HCl = no. of drops x value of pipette = V1 mL. Morality of HCl = N1
Volume of sample water = no. of drops of water x drop value of the pipette = V2
Alkalinity (ppm) = V1 x N1 x 50 x 1000/V2 Result: The alkalinity of water is ________ppm.
